A fragrance always belongs to a family — sometimes two. Knowing how to recognise them is knowing how to say what you love, and therefore how to choose. Seven families are enough to map all of perfumery.
Woody
The woody family is built around precious woods — sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, gaiac — and what grows at their feet: mosses, roots, resins.

The broadest of the families: rose, jasmine, iris, orange blossom, peony, lily of the valley.

The citrus family takes its French name, hespéridée, from the citrus fruits — bergamot, lemon, citron, mandarin, grapefruit — whose peel yields the liveliest essences in perfumery.

Once called "oriental", amber perfumes rest on balms and resins — benzoin, labdanum, incense — on vanilla, and on warm materials such as oud or saffron.

The chypre is an architecture: a bergamot opening, a floral or fruity heart, and the founding accord of oakmoss, labdanum and patchouli.
